Food intolerance is an annoying and sometimes painful experience however, it is not life threatening. Understanding what foods we are intolerant to can be a long process of trial and error. It involves excluding foods from our diet that we think we are intolerant to and cause us pain. This process is also called elimination diet.

An elimination diet avoids a food that we might show sensitivities to for about 2 to 6 weeks. It is furthermore recommended to keep a food diary to record whether symptoms improve. After the elimination process, each food item is slowly reintroduced while any new body reactions are noted. This process may be repeated with different food items to pinpoint which food is causing the problem.

Excluding certain foods that we are intolerant to helps the body to heal itself and sometimes, people can reintroduce a food without any reaction occurring or at least with much less symptoms. Food intolerance varies widely between individuals, and so each case is likely to have its own characteristics. Sometimes, an underlying problem makes the intolerance worse and needs appropriate treatment.
